(CBS)- It's more than 2,000 miles away from Las Vegas
or Atlantic City, but if you place a bet on the
Internet, odds are it will end up being processed in
Costa
Rica.
There, on the night of the NCAA basketball championship
game, the bets were pouring in to BETonSPORTS.com.
The Costa Rican-based company, by our estimates, took
in 100,000 wagers for Monday night's game alone.
This small Central American country has become a new
capital for Internet gambling.
Wal-Mart Purchase Means Lower Priced Milk Beginning
Today
The purchase by the giant U.S. retailer Wal-Mart
of controlling shares of Central American Retail Holding
Company (CARHCO), which operates the Más x Menos,
Hipermás and Maxi Bodega supermarkets in Costa
Rica, can be felt by consumers beginning today.
Wal-Mart Costa Rica, the new name for CARHCO, will
be offering milk under the Sabemás brand at
a price of 10% lower than the main milk distributor
Dos Pinos.
Wal-Mart Costa Rica also owns the discount supermarket
chain Palí, but the milk won't make it into
those stores until June.
Foreign Residents Can Only Obtain Cellular Service
Directly From ICE Office
Thinking of getting a cellular phone in Costa Rica?
No problem as long as you a resident. That has been
the standing policy by the Instituto Costarricense
de Electricidad (ICE) - the state monopoly on telecommunications
- for foreigners wanting to connect to the cellular
network.
However, since December of 2005, ICE authorized some
800 agents across the country, who some did not follow
that rule and allowed foreigners without a residency
cedula to connect their cellular telephone. An appeal
by ICE to the Sala Constitucional will now put a stop
to that practice.
Good Performance Against AIDS
The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks Costa Rica
among the 18 top nations who offered medical treatment
to 50 percent or more of the individuals who need
medicines to fight AIDS.
In Latin America, only Cuba addresses the needs
of 100 percent of the cases, closely followed by
Panama, and Barbados.
Costa Rica places sixth, behind Venezuela, Brazil,
and Argentina.
Currently, some 2,000 individuals are supplied with
medicines against AIDS here.
For countries such as Costa Rica, WHO insists that
they must care for all of their AIDS patients.
