Christopher Howard meets another one of Costa Rica’s presidents
Over the years I have personally met with three of Costa Rica’s presidents to discuss different expatriate issues. Through the many contacts that I have established over the years I have had access to many of the country’s leaders.
Since Costa Rica does not meddle in other country’s affairs, it really has no enemies. It has been the longest standing democracy in Latin America and a bastion of peace for over 60 years. Because of these reasons, our leaders do not have to be flanked by a phalanx of bodyguards and secret services when they are in public places.
The majority of the country’s political figures including its presidents are readily accessible. With a few connections or being in the right place at the right time, one can talk to almost any of Costa Rica’s leaders face to face.
A prime example of this was in 2007 when I met with Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias Sánchez at his home in San José. Three Costa Rican friends and I spent an hour chatting with the president about a variety of subjects. Despite being a world-famous celebrity, he proved to be humble and made us feel welcome. Presently, Dr. Arias is a frequent participant in conferences all around the world with the goal of championing the cause of world peace.
Most recently I had the pleasure of meeting Carlos Alvarado, the winner our most recent presidential election (Please see the photo and excuse my non- formal attire. Everything happened on the spur of the moment.). Don Carlos is a young and energetic person who is willing to tackle pressing issues like the deficit, tax reform and improving the country’s infrastructure.
