Costa Rica takes bold measures in the face of the ominous corona virus pandemic
I must applaud the Costa Rican government for its gallant effort to contain the coronavirus that is reeking havoc in most of the world. Much like other countries Costa Rica has closed its borders, urged its citizens and expats to remain at home, and is practice social distancing. Most government employees and those in the private sector are working remotely from home to reduce the risk of exposure.
I still venture outside of my home for my daily hour-long walk but keep a prudent distance from any passerby. I’ve been spending my time inside writing blogs for my website, articles for the Tico Times newspaper in English and working on the 19th edition of my perennially popular guidebook, “The New Golden Door to Retirement and Living in Costa Rica – a guide to relocation, retirement and finding happiness in Latin America’s most peaceful and tropical paradise.”
As of today there are 69 cases of of Covid-19 and just one death. Costa Rica has excellent public and private health care systems to confront the crisis.
Despite recent events those who live here can still enjoy the sunny summer days and one of the best climates in the world. Neither Panama or Nicaragua have weather like Costa Rica.
Most supplies are available in major supermarkets and the government even instituted special shopping schedule for seniors and other vulnerable people. Fruit and vegetables always flourish because of the perfect climate, so there are no shortages of these items.
NO worries! Costa Rica is a resilient county and will bounce back as Latin America’s premier retirement haven just like it did after the 2008 world economic meltdown. Larger economies were hit harder than Costa Rica during the global economic crisis. Unlike North America, Costa Rica only has 5 million people making this saying true “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.” In fact, if there is a recession in the US, as many fear, your money will go a lot farther if you relocate to Costa Rica once the virus subsides.
