Costa Rica fights the Corona Virus head on
Costa Rica continues in its flight to try and stem the tide of the insidious Corona Virus (COVID-19).
To date, the country has a confirmed 347 patients infected with the covid-19. Of those who tested positive, 167 are women and 180 women, among them 320 are Costa Ricans and 27 foreigners. Four people have so far recovered and the deaths remain at 2. No bad when you look at the figures in the U.S. and some of the other countries around the world. It is difficult to tell how many cases there are in neighboring Nicaragua and Panamá. The former is run by a dictator who is apt lie about the numbers and the latter has a government that distorts crime statistics.
To show Costa Rica’s progress, on Tuesday, the first hospital in the country began operating exclusively for the care of patients infected with the coronavirus.
The hospital is known as the Specialized Patient Care for Patients with COVID-19 Center, Centro Especializado de Atención de Pacientes con COVID-19 or (CEACO), was set up in the facilities of the former National Rehabilitation Center and was readied in a record 11 days.
“The complete rebuild of this medical center, with the best technology and the best professionals will serve to save the lives of many patients,” said President Carlos Alvarado.
The new hospital can treat eighty-eight patients in intensive care with a team of specialists, 24 hours a day. The facility is equipped with monitors, telemedicine screens that allow medical staff to treat patients with the minimum risk of getting infected, and respirators for assisted breathing, as well as X-ray equipment that allows images to be sent for analysis remotely to specialists. Its well-equipped with l48 lung ventilators, two video laryngoscopes, portable X-ray machines, 88 secretion aspirators, 88 transport carts, 22 infrared non-contact thermometers, plasma autoclave equipment for the sterilization of medical equipment, and equipment for patient mobilization.
Last week, LABIN laboratories, Hospital Clínica Bíblica, Laboratorio Páez, Laboratorios San José and Hospital Metropolitano, were authorized to do COVID-19 testing, bringing the total to eight laboratories counting the State hospitals, San Juan de Dios, Mexico, Nacional de Niños, the INCIENSA, the Laboratorio Clínico and Blood Bank of the University of Costa Rica that perform the COVID-19 test at a public level.
