Costa Rica offers hiking (senderismo) for retired expats
Costa Rica has oodles of outdoor activities for retirees. Hiking is just one that is growing increasingly popular among Costa Ricans and expats.
Here are two popular scenic hikes that should be considered.
The first option is a long treck but definitely worthwhile because of the amazing scenery. El Camino de Costa Rica offers different tours depending on a hiker’s physical conditioning. The hikes are composed mainly of rural roads but in some areas there are forest trails.
One tour starts on the Atlantic or Caribbean coast and winds it way through the country the seaside city of Quepos on the Pacific Coast. On the organization’s website there is information about the difficulty of their hikes, lodging and dining, a complete itinerary, maps, emergency care if needed, the different routes and more.

Another incredible hike is a guided tour to the Turrialba Volcano which reopened on December 4, 2020. The area was closed to visitors for a couple years because of volcanic activity.
All hikes are scheduled during the morning when there is more visibility due to less cloud cover. It takes about two hours to reach the lookout point where visitors can remain for a half hour viewing this natural wonder. Another half hour is set aside for resting or having a snack. Picnic tables, drinking water and restrooms are available.
During the climb hikers have the chance to see different flora and fauna and well as some incredible vistas.
The experienced certified guides will answer all of the hiker’s questions and point out the many attractions of the area.
The descent takes around an hour.
The cost of the excursions is 1000 colones ($1.66 in US dollars) for residents and $12 for non-residents.
